A Possible Warray Translation
On August 2nd to 4th, 2024, I attended the Lambda Retreat in Walsingham, Norfolk. This is my first complete series I have written since it ended.
This was neither my first Lambda Retreat (I attended in 2022), nor my first visit to the Shrine of Our Lady of Walsingham (I went on a pilgrimage with my local congregation in 2023).
I hope to attend the 2025 Lambda Retreat, and visit the Shrine in the future. If I can do both, so much the better. I shall include links to the Lambda Retreats in the source list.
Warray belongs to the Kunwinjkuan language family. Other members of this family include Jawoyn, Uwinjmir, and Kungarakkanj, among others.
I should say “belonged”. Glottolog claims that the language went extinct around 2000.
We are not quite sure where the traditional Warray territory was. The most important rivers were the Margaret and upper Adelaide, the nearest city was Darwin, and the closest modern town is Adelaide River (called Amuŋal).
This was a dying language when Mark Harvey wrote the grammar from which I made this translation. Thus, the last speakers had forgotten many words and grammatical structures. We’ll never know how much we have lost.
2 Timothy 3:10-17
New Jerusalem Version
10. You, though, have followed my teaching, my way of life, my aims, my faith, my patience and my love, my perseverance
11. and the persecutions and sufferings that came to me in places like Antioch, Iconium and Lystra – all the persecutions I have endured; and the Lord has rescued me from every one of them.
12. But anybody who tries to live in devotion to Christ is certain to be persecuted;
13. while those wicked impostors will go from bad to worse, deceiving others, and themselves deceived.
14. You must keep to what you have been taught and know to be true; remember who your teachers were,
15. and how, ever since you were a child, you have known the holy scriptures – from these you can learn the wisdom that leads to salvation through faith in Christ Jesus.
16. All scripture is inspired by God and useful for refuting error, for guiding people’s lives and teaching them to be upright.
17. This is how someone who is dedicated to God becomes fully equipped and ready for any good work.

10. But thou has fully known my doctrine, manner of life, purpose, faith, longsuffering, charity, patience,
11. Persecutions, afflictions, which came unto me at Antioch, at Iconium, at Lystra; what persecutions I endured: but out of them all the Lord delivered me.
12. Yea, and all that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution.
13. But evil men and seducers shall wax worse and worse, deceiving, and being deceived.
14. But continue thou in the things which thou has learned and hast been assured of, knowing of whom thou has learned them;
15. And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.
16. All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:
17. That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works.
